Our custom grill is the soul of the kitchen. High-welfare, grass-fed meat from trusted South West farms. Bass, scallops, turbot and hake landed by day boats moments from our door. We’re now licensed to buy at Brixham Fish Market, so our fish comes straight from the local fishing boats to our kitchen. Organic wines and a perfectly poured pint to go with it.
Our story
Three centuries of smuggling tales
Dating back to the 17th century, the Smugglers was once home to the notorious smuggler Bob Elliot. He is said to have hidden his contraband in a cave at Berry Head, a cave rumoured to connect to the Laywell, a spring close to upper Brixham.
Today our old stone walls and cosy nooks still hold the stories of seafarers, adventurers and Brixham’s maritime past, paired with modern comfort and a warm welcome.
Meet Mark & Emily
From Devon farm to Brixham fire
The Smugglers is run by owners Mark and Emily Bury, who spent 25 years as organic farmers and butchers in Devon. That’s why the meat on our grill matters so much to us. They know exactly where good meat comes from, how it should be raised and how to do it justice over the coals.
They also bring over 15 years of experience in Devon tourism and hospitality management, looking after Dartmoor and coastal accommodation across the English Riviera. In other words, they know how to make a stay feel effortless.
Away from the kitchen, you’ll usually find them out on the water. They both love sailing, so a historic hotel moments from Brixham Harbour feels like the perfect fit.
